Lt. Gen. Nguyen Khac Nghien, Chief of General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, expressed his hope that relations between the armies of Vietnam and Australia would be further promoted and developed for peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and in the world at large.

Lt. Gen. Nghien made the remark while receiving the Chief of the Australian Army Lt. Gen. Peter Leahy, in Hanoi on October 17.

Lt. Gen. Nghien affirmed that the Vietnam People's Army is ready to share its experiences with the Australian army, especially in medicine, humanitarian relief and mine clearing.

Lt. Gen. Peter Leahy said the two countries' national defence ties had been developed over the past seven years, laying a good foundation for the two armies to continue the ongoing cooperation programmes. It would also help in expanding their cooperation for exchanges of delegations, language training, fight against terrorism, and search and rescue operations, helping further promote the two armies' friendship and mutual understanding.

During the five-day visit ending October 17, Lt. Gen. Peter Leahy paid courtesy visits to the command officials of Military Zone No. 7, and worked with the Department for External Relations of the Ministry of National Defence. He also visited the Dien Bien Phu historical site and a number of places of interest in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
