Ella Fitzgerald? Great voice -- arguably the best female jazz singer, not so cute physically. Kind of plain, actually. Carmen McRae too.

Sarah Vaughan, very cute, at least when younger. Anita O'Day, Helen Merrill, Chris Connor, Peggy Lee, June Christy -- all gorgeous. Abby Lincoln at 75+ is still a knockout. 50 years ago . . . . irresistable.

Billie Holiday could look great or wretched depending (mainly on how many drugs ans how much drink she'd had and who'd been beating her up).

I actually have good photo of Merrill up my office -- I love her music too. The only comment the pic ever gathered was "I've never seen that photo of Marilyn Monroe before."

Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong -- the great triumvrate of American male popular singers, but none of them lookers. Billy Eckstine, on the other hand, was gorgeous -- enough to make a fella give up on heterosexuality, at least for a fling, if Eckstine had showed any inclination that way, which he didn't.

(My Mom was gag over Eckstine the way a lot of girls of her generation were gaga over Sinatra, whom she loathed, at least by the time I came to love old Blue Eyes -- Eckstine was one of the very first interracial crossover sex symbols, getting chicks of all races to go Oooohh and get all wet. Also a great singer and one of the lesser-known architects of bebop -- the very little recorded (because of the WWII recording ban) Eckstine orchestra was as much as the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra (more recorded) a seedbed for the bop explosion, and Eckstine and Diz taught the boppers and cool musicians the music theory and techniques they needed to do the things they did.)

Sorry this is too US-centric. But Joanne did leave Marlene Dietrich off the list, and while she was not a very distinguished singer (though a very distinctive one), not the league of the greats and near-greats listed above, she was certainly one iof the most beautiful (famous) woman of the 20th century,
