[This store is in our apartment building, and I witnessed this event this morning as Ivan & I were coming back from the gym. There were about 10 protesters, a cop car, two cop trucks, and an ambulance. Evidently they were expecting violence.]

Activists blockade Victoria's Secret store in New York City

October 23rd, 2006

9:45 AM, Manhattan, NY: Activists blockaded the entrance of the Victoria's Secret Store at 85th and Broadway (2333 Broadway) this morning to demand that the company end its environmentally devastating catalog production. Two members of Catalogs without Clearcuts blockaded the door with chains and bike locks and were joined by supporters displaying a giant pink satin banner that read "Catalog Production = Forest Destruction." Victoria's Secret mails more than one million catalogs daily destroying Endangered Forests like the North American Boreal Forest in the process.

"I've been to the Boreal Forest," said one of the dedicated activists, PJ McKosky. "I've seen the teeming wildlife and intricate ecosystems. The fact that Victoria's Secret is so blatantly and knowingly participating in the destruction of this forest is sickening."

"It's time for Victoria's Secret to stop 'considering' a new paper policy and start implementing one," said Rev. Charles Blustein Ortman, minister of the Unitarian Church of Montclair, NJ. "Every day Victoria's Secret stalls, they do more damage to the environment."

Catalogs without Clearcuts is a coalition of New York City area activists including the Wetlands Activists Collective, students, and religious leaders. Today's action in New York City shows an escalation of tactics employed by grassroots activists working on the campaign to reform Victoria's Secret's catalog practices.
