I think many of Bush's circle are still very, dangerously religious, David Kuo's book and Tucker Carlson's revelations notwithstanding.
I think Bush, Cheney, et. al., resent their religious constituents, mock them in private, etc., but for the same reason any elite holds their base in contempt. The Pres. of Hungary was scandalously discovered to have a pretty contemptuous attitude toward his public, but I don't think that means he doesn't think he is acting upon some high statesman-like principles regardless.
In other words, Bush & Co's contempt for their evangelical base, for the Pat Robertsons of the world, is a separate issue than whether Bush & crew are themselves religious. I think a lot of the Bush gang are religious and are partly driven by religious goals.
Bush and Co. aren't seclar humanists waiting to bust out of their Christo-fascist chains so that they can be who they really want to be, if only they could shake those annoying Christers off their backs -- not any more than Ahmadenijad is waiting for the right cue to come out of his socialist closet. Bush and cohorts resent the little people regardless, whether they're their own important nutball sector of the public base,
or not. They probably also make fun of environmentalists and union activists. Basically, their contempt is "fuck the American public in all its stripes,"and when they're not being outed by Kuo or Carlson, they're cting that way anyway int he kinds of wars they start and the draconian bills they sign.
So - Fuck them.

The greatness of a people is the result not of the sum of all its achievements but in the last resort of the sum of its outstanding achievements. Let no one say that the picture produced as a first impression of human civilization is the impression of its achievement as a whole. This whole edifice of civilization is in its foundations and in all its stones nothing else than the result of the creative capacity, the achievement, the intelligence, the industry of individuals: in its greatest triumphs it represents the great crowing achievement of individual god-favoured geniuses, in its average accomplishment the achievement of men of average capacity, and in its sum doubtless the result of the use of human labour-force in order to turn to account the creations of genius and of talent. So it is only natural that when the capable intelligences of a nation, which are always in the minority, are regarded as only the same value as all the rest, then genius, capacity, the
value of personality are slowly subjected to the majority, and this process is then falsely named the rule of the people. For this is not the rule of the people, but in reality the rule of stupidity, of mediocrity, of half-heartedness, of cowardice, of weakness, and of inadequacy. Rule of the people means rather that a people should allow itself to be governed and led by its most capable individuals, those who are born to the task, and not that a chance majority which of necessity is alien to these tasks should be permitted to administer all spheres of life.
