Religion seems to enjoy a protected status in our society where such inferences can be made. Any questioning is dangerous and personally insulting. I'd always assumed that the reason was a fear that religion can't stand up to scrutiny, but maybe I'm wrong. In any case, one can think that God is nonsense without thinking religion is meaningless. One can think religious beliefs are false without concluding that everyone who believes is a fool.
