a number of southern federal judges during the time of the civil rights movement were notoriously unjust in their refusal to apply laws fairly and expeditiously (mississippi's harold cox was probably the worst), however, there were some who entertained no specious legalistic evasion and acted with dispatch, among the latter was chief judge bryan simpson (a truman appointee) of the middle district of florida...

simpson presided over civil rights violation cases arising from the violence and brutality of the st. augustine police during 1964 demonstrations in the 'nation's oldest city', at one point in the proceedings, simpson asked why officers had not identfied/disarmed/arrested some white thugs at the scene, told that these guy had broken no laws, the judge replied that he couldn't believe the *state* had no authority to seize weapons in that circumstance, 0 quipping that 'the law isn't that big a boob'...

of course, in the south, federal courts repeatedly allowed the law to be a boob... mh
