The country's first arrest under the new and powerful Domestic Violence Act has been reported from Chennai.
Joseph, a peon employed in the Tamil Nadu water and drainage board, was arrested on charges of beating his wife.
His wife, Benedict Mary, a government schoolteacher, filed a complaint with the police.
According to her complaint, her husband beat her up with a stick and an umbrella after a quarrel in the night.
She is injured and has been admitted into a hospital.
