It's nice to see the argument that we can't afford to do anything turned on its head.

Agreed. Unfortunately, I don't think that there is a consensus amongst our rulers yet about doing anything in really effective ways to turn the tide. Most of what I see are token efforts in the realm of what's going to be "cost-effective", considering "market forces". Again, we have evidence of the incompetence and the inertia or "bi-partisan" class interests amongst most of our rulers.
