The Ibsen Festival Vietnam 2006 kicked off in Hanoi on October 28 as the first comprehensive introduction of Henrik Ibsen and his works in Vietnam in the centenary celebration of the famous Norwegian playwright's death.
The event, which will last until November 11, is co-sponsored by the Norwegian Embassy, the Youth Stage Theatre, the Vietnam Drama Theatre and the Centre for Cultural Research, Support and Development.
The play "Hedda Gabler", staged by the Vietnam Dramatic Theatre, opened the festival on the night of October 28. "A Doll's House" will be played at the Youth Theatre from November 1-5.
The festival includes a lecturing course for students at the University of Social Science and Humanities on November 6 and a seminar on Ibsen at Hanoi University Hall on November 7.
The two most distinguished experts on Ibsen in Norway, Ms Ba Clementsen, who is Director of the Ibsen Festival in Norway and Director at the National Theatre in Oslo, and Prof. Frode Helland, Director at the Centre for Ibsen Studies at the University of Oslo, will take part in these events.
The festival will be wrapped up with an exhibition entitled "Ibsen in our time," which highlights the important themes addressed in the Norwegian playwright's works and shows the socio-political relevance of Ibsen today.
Ibsen portrayed conflicts and existential crises that are familiar to the modern world, such as equality between men and women, children's' rights, and freedom of speech.
Henrik Ibsen was born in 1828 and died in 1906. He was compared with William Shakespeare and regarded as the world's greatest playwright. (VNA)
