There was a pogrom in the city of Kondopog in Karelia this weekend. According to this article in Komsomolskaya Pravda (not necessarily the most reliable source)(http://www.kp.ru/daily/23766.5/56946/)... Well, I do a real quick translate and synopsis below:

Caucasian Pogroms Have Started in Karelia

There have been fights and arson in Kondopog since the middle of the week, but the culmination was on Saturday. On Saturday there was a gathering of over 2000 people. They demanded that the authorities drive Caucasians from the city, return businesses to Russian enterprises, and create a society (I think the sense is defense society) out of veterans of Chechnya. Then they completely destroyed the city market and burned down the Seagull restaurant, which belonged to Chechens.

The interethnic conflict began when a bartender in the Seagull made an unflattering comment to a group of people, who then proceded to beat him. They left the restaurant. An hour later a group of Chechens came to the restaraunt and attacked the patrons, who had nothing to do with the first group, with the slogans (according to eyewitness Anton A.) "Cut the Russian pigs!" and "Allah Akhbar!" A Russian guy in the restaurant offered to fight them "man to man," and he was stabbed in the chest. It spilled out onto the street.

The police however have a different version of events. They say that 9 people came to the restaurant at night drunk and demanded to be allowed in free. The bartender said no and was beat on the head. The police arrived and threw them out. Five minutes later cars came loaded with Chechens and Dagestanis.

The ensuing pogrom lasted until Sunday morning. Four people were killed.
