Monday, September 4, 2006 (Karachi):
Thousands of US and Pakistani naval forces began a series of military and counter terrorism exercises today in the northern Arabian Sea, the Pakistani Navy said.
The exercises, dubbed Inspired Union 06, are expected to last three days and involve the USS Enterprise Aircraft Carrier Strike Group and four Pakistani vessels, said Captain Siddiq Akbar, a spokesperson for the Pakistani Navy.
The Enterprise carrier group includes the guided missile frigate USS Nicholas, guided missile destroyer USS McFaul and attack submarine USS Albuquerque.
The maneuvers will focus on counter-terrorism and also involve special forces troops from both nations, Akbar said.
Pakistan joined the US-led war on terror following the September 11, 2001 attacks and has arrested scores of al-Qaida members throughout the South Asian nation. (AP)
