``Math is taught in the US witH the specific purpose of weeding people out, starting with 8th grade algebra....''

``Why do you think this? Just curious.'' Andy F

Algebra in the 8th grade is part of the tracking system, and a branch point. You have to get B's in the math just before, so you can take it in the 8th grade. Otherwise you take it in the 9th. If you add up the secondary school requirements in order to finish first year calculus in high school you have to start with algebra in the 8th grade. If you put it off, you can squeak by on the basic requirement of pre-calculus but you will probably not get into the major or college you want.

Now with `No Child Left Behind' you have to pass certain exams before and after 8th grade algebra, so teachers teach to the exam requirements.

I have a buddy who teaches 8th grade algebra and math and he complains about it. This is in California, other states might be different.
