Are there no degrees of authoritarianism in your view of governments? Are they all domineering brutes? Sandinistas didn't shoot their opponents, which might have been a mistake.

Fidel gave Salvador an AK47 during his visit to Chile. Allende ended up firing it on the last day of his life. I remember a photo of him, aiming skyward from a balcony, helmet on, as the chief government building was being bombed on that fateful September 11th. It was made into a poster and was last seen by yours truly in my favourite bar in the East Bay.

Henry K was quoted as saying something about how irresponsible the people of Chile had been to elect a socialist....
