schmitt's ambition and sense of self-preservation may well have been enough for him to decide to affiliate with the nazis, but heidegger encouraged him to do so, saying that together they would become the philosophers of the new order...

some renewal of interest in schmitt - particularly his critiques of bourgeois liberalism, faith in science, and historical progress - is probably understandable given certain intellectual interests of recent past... mh
