Tariq Ali told me that Chavez had read some of his novels. Joe Stiglitz, whom I had a chat with shortly after he met Chavez, was impressed with the guy's intellectual curiosity, too. Incidentally, Stiglitz is promoting his latest book, and on the Lopate show in NYC and also at the book launch party in NYC the other night, he was praising Chavez' policies pretty strongly.
