1) BRUTUS LECTURE AT COLUMBIA UNIV. LAW SCHOOL Thursday, September 28, 2006 Dennis Brutus, poet, writer, educator and activist Poetry and Protest: Human Rights in Africa 12:10 - 1:10 pm William and June Warren Hall 101 (Located at 1125 Amsterdam Avenue, between 115th and 116th Streets)

Dennis Brutus was born in Zimbabwe and educated in South Africa. His political campaigns led to a ban from all political and social activity and incarceration on Robben Island. Brutus eventually won the right to stay in the US as a political refugee and is currently a Visiting Scholar at the UKZN Centre for Civil Society. Brutus is Professor Emeritus of Africana Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, recipient of the Langston Hughes Award and the Paul Robeson Award for ‘artistic excellence, political consciousness and integrity’. His new memoir, includes poetry and an analysis of the anti-apartheid struggle, work against injustice in Third World countries, and campaigns against militarism.
