Niall Ferguson seems to prefer empires to nation-states because the latter are more prone to ethnic rivalry.

BTW, I think that imperialism and globalization are essentially a good thing for the same reason Marx thought capitalism was essentially a good thing - it clears the field of petty nationalisms and their institutional appendages and separatist identities, and moves one step closer toward a global governance system that is a necessary condition for socialism.
