Well, NYC is glorious -- but most of what I know about it is Manhattan --
and, yes, the public aspect of NYC is the most glorious thing about it.

Yes. LA is sprawl, but there are public spaces -- Griffith park, the beaches,
the park around the LA art museum, the parks in the Silverlake district,
etc.

And yes, you always have to drive.
And sprawl. And the almost total lack of public
spaces. Unlike NYC where everything seems to be
public, not just becuase of the subway, but also
because almost every building has an entrace from a
public street rather than from a gated yard or a
driveway, and because in NYC one can actually walk
and experience the city, whereas in LA one must drive
in that bubble of a car that separates us from our
environs.
It is no coincidence that the story of Todd Haynes'
film _Safe_ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114323/ which
portrays ultimate alienation, takes place in LA.
I like LA's art deco though.
