There is nothing wrong with this system so long as the apprentices get to be journeymen and the journeymen get to be masters. They say it takes a solid ten years to learn any craft. You might as well be productive while you're learning. The problem with the system now is that this upward mobility is vanishing. There are still arts that use it, for example ballet, but mostly the star system is coming to govern academia and the arts.
