Software giant Microsoft and education officials in Hue City signed an agreement on March 31, to provide computer training for up to 7,400 teachers.

The deal is an extension of the first phase of the Partners in Learning programme, which ran from 2005 to 2006 and was a boon for information technology in the the central region.

The new deal will see 7,000 teachers receive basic computer courses between 2007 and 2009, while 300 to 400 more will receive advanced courses designed to allow them to then be able to teach their colleagues.

Microsoft estimates the training will benefit 50,000 teachers and 2 million students by the time the programme is completed. .

The Partners in Learning initiative has so far trained 225,000 teachers and 2.8 million students across Asia, according to Microsoft. Globally, more than 5 million teachers and 100 million students are expected to benefit from the programme over the next five years. (VNA)
