Grant had a semi-undeserved reputation as a drunk -- according to his biographer William Feeley he would occasionlly go off on a real bender, but Julia Grant kept him on a pretty tight leash. Anyway during the war some people were making snide remarks about Grant's way with the bottle, and Lincoln is supposed to have remarked he'd like to know what Grant was drinking, he'd send his other generals a case.
Of course the Soviet generals who won the GPW were all totally smashed all the time, as befits Russians and Bolsheviks generally.
