PYONGYANG, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Wednesday handed over the remains of six U.S. soldiers killed in the Korean War to a visiting U.S. delegation, the official Korean Central News Agency KCNA reported.
According to the KCNA, the DPRK government decided to return the remains of the soldiers to the United States citing humanitarian reasons.
The delegation, headed by U.S. New Mexico state Governor Bill Richardson, has left with the remains to South Korea after a four-day visit to the DPRK.
"This is a very positive gesture on the part of the North Korean (DPRK) government," Richardson said in a statement.
During the visit, Richardson and the delegation visited historic sites, and met with Kim Yong Dae, vice-president of the Presidium of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s Supreme People's Assembly, and Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan. The two sides discussed the nuclear issue and the return of remains of U.S. soldiers killed during the 1950-53 Korean War.
The U.S. government said more than 33,000 U.S. soldiers were killed during the Korean War and about 8,100 are still listed as missing in action. Related:
U.S.: Macau unblocks frozen DPRK funds
WASHINGTON, April 10 (Xinhua) -- The United States said Tuesday that the Macanese authorities have unblocked the DPRK funds frozen at the Banco Delta Asia and authorized account holders can withdraw their money from the bank.
"I will let the Macanese authorities speak to how they want to put it but the bottom line is that they have unblocked these accounts and the account holders can -- authorized account holder can -- withdraw the funds from those accounts," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.
DPRK top leader meets U.S. delegation
PYONGYANG, April 10 (Xinhua)-- Kim Yong Dae, vice-president of the Presidium of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Supreme People's Assembly, met the visiting U.S. delegation heade by New Mexico state governor Bill Richardson here on Tuesday.
DPRK Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan also attended the meeting, according to Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
U.S. supports Macau in unblocking frozen DPRK accounts
WASHINGTON, April 10 (Xinhua) -- The United States supports the Macau authorities in unblocking all DPRK-related accounts currently frozen in the Macau bank Banco Delta Asia, the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement on Tuesday.
Based on previous discussions with officials from China, China's Macau and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK),as well as understandings reached with the DPRK on the use of these funds, the United States would support a decision by the Macau authorities to unblock the accounts in question, the statement said.
