NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Domestic car sales in the financial year that ended March 31 rose 22 percent from the year before to 1,076,408 from 882,208 in 2005/06, an industry body said on Wednesday.
In March, sales rose 2.9 percent from the same month a year earlier to 114,195 units from 110,978, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said.
Sales of commercial vehicles -- trucks, buses and goods carriers -- rose to 49,245 in March, up 13.2 percent year on year from sales of 43,502 units in the same month last year.
Commercial vehicle sales for 2006/07 were 467,882, up 33.3 percent from 351,041 a year ago.
Sales of motorcycles in India, the world's largest market for bikes after China, fell an annual 3.5 percent in March to 517,334 units. Cumulative sales of motorcycles in 2006/07 were at 6,553,664, up 12.79 percent from 5,810,599 the year before.
Indian automobile companies made nearly 1.14 million cars in the financial year that ended in March 2006, and analysts forecast the market to reach 2 million units by 2010 as a boom in Asia's fourth-largest economy spurs consumer spending.
