MOSCOW. April 19 (Interfax) - Most Russians believe that the country's democratic achievements are not in jeopardy and that the government needs stability and evolutionary reforms, not drastic changes in economic and political life, according to a poll conducted by VTsIOM.
Sixty-four percent of Russians believe their country needs stability and evolutionary transformation, and not abrupt changes in economy and politics, while 29% respondents do not support such a view.
Forty-five percent of Russians want social and economic policies in Russia to combine elements of both the market and socialism, while 28% would like them to be based on market relations. Eighteen percent want a return to the socialist regime that existed in the Soviet Union.
According to VTsIOM, 54% of Russians believe that the results of the privatization in the 1990s should be reviewed because it was largely unfair and illegal. Thirty-six percent believe there is no need to review the results of the privatization, as it may cause serious conflicts in the country.
Fifty-four per cent of Russians want maximum entry restrictions for foreigners who create job shortages for Russians and worsen the criminal situation.
The poll was conducted by VTsIOM on January 20-21, 2007 among 1,600 people in 153 towns across 46 Russian regions. The poll results were published in Moscow on Thursday.
