I too grew up on a farm, & attended a rural grade school in southwestern Michigan. The high school I attended was in a town of 20,000. I got my B.A. from a regional teachers college in what was then a small industrial city of about 70,000. You phrase very well the advantage of such a background. Attempts to distinguish between "real people" and others comes damn close to echoing fascist ideology -- and as every one on this list knows I almost always object to using that term in reference to the u.s. At the time I became radicalized ISU was ISNU, a pure teachers college, & B/N Illinois had a combined population of around 40,000 in the heart of corn country. Such slang as "hip metropoles" exhibits a basic contempt for people disguised as contempt for a mostly mon-existent small slice of "leftists."
