It was a patch of un-Manhattan in Manhattan, definitive proof that the city indeed had it all — skyscrapers, a nearly naked cowboy in Times Square and horses you could rent for $55 an hour. ... Mary Hanlon, whose 11-year-old daughter has been to the riding school twice a week, said ... “I can’t believe one person can take this away,” she said. “It’s a community center.”

Why would the stable's customers, affluent enough to afford the riding lessons and presumably wise in the ways of money, find it hard to believe that one person could "take it away"?
