Aha, but chimps _do_ pass on ways to use tools, and presumably other things, through the generations. If a chimp figures out how to use a stick to catch ants (for example), and other chimps copy it, and they pass that knowledge on to their children, then their tool-using patterns are derived from the long-dead chimp. You do not need language to do this.
(Whatever happened to that research with Koko? I want an update. Are her offspring signing to each other?)
