My mom was an old-school, hard-core hater--- racist, homophobic, sexist, but most amazing to me as a nine-year old, anti-semitic. I used to be like "Mom, didn't that go out of style, even for bigots? I mean, y'know, the whole, uh, holocaust thing happened...." She would roll her eyes and continue explaining to me what were 'jew names' so I could avoid those kids at school. Of course, she was second-generation lithuanian-american northeast philly. Ya know?
She was great, in a way, for developing politics wehn young, because at a very early age I learned to adopt the opposite opinion of her on any and all issues. I've found that particular ideological formation has been more rigorously ethically correct ever since than any other particular stripe of leftist theory.
