Deutsche Bahn chief Hartmut Mehdorn is making a real effort to live up to his nickname: Rumpelstiltskin. That’s what the chairman of the Trade Union of German Locomotive Engineers (GDL), Manfred Schell, calls him. After the “juridical teasing” (Schell) on the part of the corporation against the GDL petered out, Mehdorn has shifted to rude threats and insults. A “small group of trade union functionaries have seduced their members with illusory demands and have attempted to split the labor force of the Deutsche Bahn,” explained Mehdorn to der Spiegel. The rejection of a new offer by the Deutsche Bahn, which did not address a single demand of the GDL, is “irresponsible”. Striking locomotive engineers are being threatened with disciplinary measures, and their trade union with charges of millions of euros in compensatory damages."
