I think this is a good definition of what post-punk is NOT, but in turn also what it is:

http://www.historyshots.com/Rockmusic/index.cfm

A "Genealogy of Pop/Rock" wall poster, which starts in the 1950s with pioneers like Little Richard and Carl Perkins, and draws the end-line, which for this poster is 1980, with folks like John Travolta, Eddie Money, and Bonnie Tyler. Yes, John Travolta. At the end of the arc, in 1980. Punk, much less post-punk, is literally not on this sprawling map. (Bowie is barely squeezed in the margins.)

The poster is 36" x 20" and is $33, before shipping. Discounted when it's bought in bulk!

I think that explains quite a lot!

"Yeah, and before that the VU. That's how I came to punk - in the early/mid-70s, amidst all the pap there was Eno-era Roxy Music, then Eno solo, etc. And the NY Dolls."
