I believe Marx himself used the word to describe recurrent periods in the business cycle -- hence his usage of it would indicate (abstractly) the historicity of capitalism but _not_ the immediate threat of being retired to the dustbin. Those recurrent crises are _tropes_ for but _not_ harbingers of the actual end.
