Funny you should mention this connection. Stephen King has a very famous analysis of this film in his book _Danse Macabre_ (derived from a course he once taught on how horror works) where he argued that Amityville was a thinly veiled economic horror story: the anxiety that every family has that their house value might fall and that they might fall behind on the money for mortgage and upkeep, personified into demons that haunt them.
