Ahhh, of all the detritus from my days as a film reviewer (yes, this i did, too, when i was a political reporter) ... i have two posters framed and on my kitchen walls - here in columbia, SC.
The one poster is of The Moderns (Alan Rudolph) and Repentance (Tengiz Abuladze)... Which was made in teh Soviet Union in about 1986-87???
I should say that I enjoy both mainly for the poster designs. Neither film is among my top 20 all time favourites

Those that ARE in my list of favourites include
Andre Rublev, Nostalghia, Ivan, Potemkin, Battle for Algiers
Other Soviet era greats were Alexandr Nevsky, When Father Went Away on Business, Testimony.
About Little Vera, it was presented, in South Africa at the time as an allegory for the 'decay' of socialism.

For those interested in such things, a sequel is being made to the classic Gorbachev-era movie Malenkaya Vera (Little Vera). (Gorby-era movies tend to be dark, like that one and a series of crime dramas I can think of.) Anyway it's the same director and the same actress playing Vera, 20 years on. IIRC that was the first Russian film to depict sex. OK I know Moscow Doesn't Believe in Tears did it first, but that part was edited out in the Soviet version,
