Carl, what makes you the arbiter of who is entitled to be on the left? I don't like poverty (for anyone), I want to be able to send my kids to college (and everyone to do so), and I do like middle class material comfort (for everyone), so I'm not ascetic enough to be a leftist? I like to get some respect for the work that I do, so I'm a bad guy right wing scumbag? And I'm hearing this from a guy who made a living as a career PR flack for the same bad-guy corporations I used to defend? Are we back in fuck-you territory, Carl? Yeah, I was a bad-guy corpo lawyer, but you are hardly in a position to get ethically up on a high horse. Anyway, I'm a college professor now, or is that bad too?
My idea of being on the left isn't advocating universal poverty, it's universal prosperity. Politically I am a bourgeois liberal; economically I am a market socialist, I'm a fan of Hayek and Mises and Judge Posner; culturally I am an old-fashioned Allen Bloom high culture snob (except I like sex and rock and roll). I despise political correctness and think antisex feminism is reactionary. I call female type persons girls unless they are my students. Probably all that disqualifies me from many people's conception of the left.
Feel free, therefore, to read me out of the left, for all the good it does. My unconventional views don't seem to impress my employers, who have run me out of one career for being a red and would probably another if they knew. (Oddly enough the corporate lawyers were the only people who didn't care.)
I meant to comment, Carl, to change the subject, that you are the world's champion subject changer. I said, I think Michelangelo's achievements deserve honor, respect and money. You say, global warming sucks. Maybe my belief in universal prosperity (shared with one Karl Marx) disqualifies me as a leftist. Anyway, in my biz, this is called a non sequiter. But that just shows I am a right wing asshole, logic being one of those white male hegemonic tools for oppressing the subordinate groups, right?
