[lbo-talk] did Craig commit a crime?

Yeah, it is chuckle-worthy because GOP Senator Craig is a major policy scumbag who voted to ban gay marriage, etc.

And it's funny to read parts in the cop report like: "I was able to see Craig's blue eyes as he peered into my stall." Almost tender.

Of course, were I sitting on the john, and if a strange man acted *exactly* the way Craig allegedly did (according to the police report) -- which is a big "if" -- I can't say I wouldn't be creeped out -- not because of anything sexual, necessarily, but maybe just because I'd be wondering what the guy's deal was -- confused maybe I was someone else, liked to watch guys poop, etc. -- that sort of thing. And Craig, for whatever reason, did in fact plead guilty to "peeping" (yes, that is the technical, legal term on the forms he signed) and disorderly, lewd conduct. He probably shouldn't have done that -- but he did say he was guilty.

But if you deconstruct the actual event -- one shoe hitting another's shoe, sliding fingers underneath a stall wall -- to be arrested for that, alone? It seems a bit much.

Believe it or not, I thought Suicide Girls -- a site I am in no way a fan of -- had an editorial about it that was surprisingly insightful and thought-provoking. The writer also believes it is ridiculous for Craig to be charged, as delicious as it might be to see an anti-gay GOP Sen. get some comeuppance:

Republican Senator Taps His Gay Foot Near Cop! TUESDAY AUGUST 28 2007 9:00 AM

In what may be the lamest sex scandal of all time, Senator Larry Craig of Idaho, was arrested in June by a Minneapolis airport cop for “disorderly conduct.” The undercover officer thought Craig was sending signals indicating he was looking for sex in an airport bathroom. Man on man sex. Craig pleaded guilty, paid a $575 fine and was put on probation for one year.
