I've always found it helpful to divide the world into three categories:
- The known - The unknown - The unknowable
At any moment in time, these are three distinct subsets of the world. Items in each category can change categories over time. Religious faith can (and, IMHO, should) speak to the 3rd. Historically, it also spoke to the 2nd. As science has progressed, many items migrated from 3 to 2 and ultimately to 1. To the extent that religion speaks to the 2nd (or even 1, but that's stubborn craziness), it should be prepared to backtrack when the status of a particular item becomes known.
