There's a little book by some named something like Willy Sypher called 
something like "The Four Stages of Art" -- and there, the thesis is 
advanced that art unfolds through four stages: gothic, classic, 
mannerist, and baroque. Lather, rinse, repeat.

According to this, the postmodern is the "mannerist" phase of the 
current cycle.

It's an interesting thesis.
