Yeah, it sucks. Worse than putting us in the closet, it makes us all 
participants in a business deal. On top of which, it's so bloody bloodless.

If husband/wife don't work for you, try "mate, sweetie, better half, 
lover, paramour, joystick, honey, jelly roll, hostage to fortune....." 
anything but partner....
