But when I see people who do consciously dress down, I often assume it's a sign of contempt, or perhaps condescension, not unlike talking down. I especially feel this way when it's candidates running for office. When I made that terrible mistake myself, I never appeared in public without at least a shirt and tie, even when our band was playing punk clubs.
