I don't know enough to have any concrete opinion on current conditions in Pakistan. Tariq Ali's account seems persuasive, though I have been wary of his thought since he made his horrible blunders of (a) arguing that the U.S. should repair its damage in Iraq before withdrawing and (b) urging support of Kerry in 2004.
But one general comment that may or may not be concretely relevant: The world cannot really afford very many national leaders who have U.S. support.
