I agree with Chuck. I am a Libertarian Socialist and can't believe the way people on the left grovel to the likes of clowns like Fidel and Chavez.

And by the way - Tariq Ali was a Trotskyist - and we know what Trotsky did to Mahkno and the anarchists/soviets after the Russian Revolution.

I really like his analysis on many matters, but Tariq Ali is at the end of the day, an authoritarian socialist who grows excited at the macho posturing of any commandante, ad nauseam who goes against US interests. Thank goodness he atleast will not grovel behind some "grass roots" Islamic leaders...

To give Ali credit - he has lately been himself critiquing Pakistan for putting too much of their fortunes into a "leader". So maybe he is moving more towards a different path...

I think many of you are personally attacking Chuck and few are actually critiquing the credibility of his statement. I don't care how many PHD's you all have or where you went to school or how intelligent and self-righteous you all are - but personally insulting someone as "obese" is the pinnacle of immaturity. My 5 year old doesn't even do that...yet..

Doug - I think you should ban people from this list who fail to comply with the standard rules of mature, spirited engagement.

Like it or not but history is my witness, authoritarian socialism is not a replacement for neo-liberal capitalism. Michael Bakunin was right!

People must renouce their petty sectarian differences and unite through solidarity to evolve past the capitalist system and stamp out religious statism. Another World is possible, but not through Lenin-Stalin-Mao.

Having "faith" in a leader like Hugo Chavez is wasted energy and complete historical regression. Needing leaders or mythic martyrs/heroes is also a cop-out as are nationalistic movements that are separatist in nature and later become another competing republics for natural resources.

Where is the revolutionary theory (not ideology) on this listserve regarding social revolution and what it would entail?

Why aren't we studying Agamben and others to discredit the very idea of a "Republic"?

I think what most of you dislike and fear is a truly liberated society - because many of you inside, and might not want to admit it - but still hold the notion that true democracy - direct democracy leads to despotism.

I must side with Chuck here and wonder if most on this list are merely liberal reformists, pro-capitalist and/or very pro-Republic.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough for you. I know that at this time of year, the colder temperatures and increased caloric intake make Americans a bit dense, so let me say this one more time.
