EXPENSIVE NOTES That four-second musical introduction that sounds at the start of Windows Vista, the new operating system from Microsoft that went on sale Tuesday, took 20 people and 18 months to create, Linda Tischler reports in Fast Company.

The team started with 500 unique sounds submitted by composers, sound designers, engineers and developers. A decision that “a peaceful theme was what the hypercaffeinated, overstimulated PC users of the world needed now” helped winnow the list down to a manageable number, and focus groups then narrowed the list to three. Jim Allchin, co- president of Microsoft’s Windows Group, made the final call.

There is no word on what all this cost.
