It ws first shown at the Venice Film Festival. It was then put on tv since German tv paid for the bulk of the production. Fassbinder films almost the entire novel with only a few chanes. It was a touchstone work for him. He even played a character called Farnz Biberkopf in an earlier film FOX AND HIS FRIENDS. *********

Cheers! I didn't know about the Venice connection. FOX AND HIS FRIENDS is another of my fave Fassbinder films. Ah the poor Biberkopfs of the world... ***************************** BM continued:

Might you be thinking of Fassbinder's BRD trilogy which consists of THE MARRIAGE OF MARIA BRAUN; LOLA; and VERONIKA VOSS? They were shot during the same perion (1978-1981). And you can throw in the stand alone LILI MARLEEN as well. ********************************** No, sorry for my confused writing. I meant the other Doeblin novels in the triology: Karl and Rosa: A Novel (November 1918), A People Betrayed and Berlin Alexanderplatz. But I love that Fassbinder quadruplet of films you mention as well. Great films all. I think I'd show MARRIAGE last right after LILI MARLEEN, if I could control the screenings. It would have been fantastic if Fassbinder could have filmed the other two Doeblin novels. Oh well, we do have Margareta von Trotta's film Rosa Luxemburg ...

Best, Mike B)
