Florida police filed attempted first degree murder charges against shuttle astronaut Lisa Nowak today, saying she intended to kidnap and kill her rival in a love triangle involving another astronaut.
The new charge was filed after a morning bail hearing in which Orange County Judge Mike Murphy allowed her to post bail on charges that she assaulted and attempted to kidnap Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman. Nowak was re-arrested after posting the $15,500 bond.
Prosecutor Amanda Cowan argued in a second hearing later in the day that Nowak should be denied bail on the new charge.
"This is a life (sentence) felony," said Cowan, as Nowak stood nearby in a blue jail jumpsuit, her eyes cast downward. Cowan said Nowak carried weapons, including a 4-inch knife and a steel mallet, that showed Nowak intended to kill Shipman.
