JERUSALEM, Feb. 7 — A group of prominent Israeli Arabs has called on Israel to stop defining itself as a Jewish state and become a "consensual democracy for both Arabs and Jews," prompting consternation and debate across the country. =============================================== Excellent intiative, but haven't Palestinians in Israel always objected to a "Jewish" state? If the conflict between them ever ends, I'm confident the idea of a binational state would take root in both peoples, and social issues would come to the fore. It's not war, but the outbreak of peace, which most threatens Zionism and the constituted Israeli state. You saw a foretaste of this in the development of the "revisionist" school of Israeli historians in the brief thaw following the Oslo accords which caused great concern among Zionist ideologues about the future of their ideal.
