Good food doesn't have to be expensive, but it can be time and effort consuming to hit farmer's markets and whatnot instead of supermarkets.

Pay more attention to taste than price, and often where immigrants shop is a good clue. Also you can make up the price difference with something that tastes really special by using it sparingly, esp. cold cuts and cheese. Which you should probably use sparingly anyway, so it works out.

Another sushi tip -- if you can't roll you own, the pre-made packs in groceries can be a good compromise *if you get them fresh*, like minutes after they've been made. It makes all the difference in the world, though you wind up eating them at 10:30AM.
