Completely false, as regards Lawrence. He had won the Hashemites
to the Allied cause by promising, with FO authorization, that the
British would support their ascendancy in Arabia. When the British
betrayed that promise by backing the Sauds, and fobbing the
Hashemites off with an ersatz "Jordanian" kingdom and the poisoned
chalice of Iraq, Lawrence felt disgraced and personally betrayed.
He died a disillusioned and embittered man.

Thanks for the correction. What I don't know always kills me.
But does this really change the basic premise that we are living with
the consequences of our own imperialism, justified with a liberal
cover story of the most cynical variety---a mentality that also
manages to perpetuate the imperialistic project?
And, still Lawrence, betrayed or not, was a great romantic hero of
western liberalism used as a cover in a grand imperial design.
