NEW DELHI: India and Pakistan on Monday exchanged lists of their nuclear installations under an agreement that prohibits the two from attacking each other's nuclear facilities in the event of a war.
The lists were exchanged simultaneously here and in Islamabad through diplomatic channels as per the practice under the agreement, which was signed in December 1988 and came into force in January 1991.
"Under the agreement, the two countries, on January 1 every year, are to inform each other of the nuclear installations and facilities to be covered by the pact," said the external affairs ministry.
"The first such exchange of lists took place on January 1, 1992. This is the 16th consecutive time that both countries have exchanged such lists," it added.
The non-attack agreement is a unique bilateral pact between India and Pakistan, which saw the two nations swapping the lists even during heightened tensions in 2002 and 2003, during the forward mobilisation of troops along the border.
