The US Atlantic organisation has pledged to finance a project to make Da Nang Eye Hospital in central Da Nang city one of the three largest and most modern eye hospitals in Vietnam and equal to those in Southeast Asia, said the hospital's Director Pham Binh.

The US $10 million project will be implemented in three phases, Binh added. In the first phase which started in 2006, US $1.5 million was used for facility purchase and training for 20 eye experts.

The US organisation will help build a 12,000 sq.m multi-functional building with 150 beds in the second phase.

In the third phase, the hospital will continue being upgraded so as to reach the level of leading eye hospitals in Southeast Asia by 2010.

The Da Nang Eye hospital has also received US $500,000 from Orbis International for technology transfer and doctor training in the US. The organisation will also provide on-the-spot training for doctors of the hospital every year.

The hospital now provides treatment for 7,000 patients. It expects to treat 10,000 patients each year by 2010. (VNA)
