Except that, according to the article, part of the reason for Ahmadinejad's trouble is taking such a hard line on the nuclear issue. It also notes Iran's muted response to the US arrest of Iranians in Iraq. Could be they're looking to cut a deal.

IMO, that's what Rice and the Shrub, among others, are hoping their "troop surge" and other puffadder acts will accomplish with both the rulers of Syria and Iran. Always negotiate from a perceived position of strength. As the US military finally withdraws to its striking postions from bases (e.g. Qatar) and naval vessels, there will have to be some reliable way of controlling the production of oil, ergo neotiations with the main political powers that be now and in future.
